the leopard's new spots

images: MAC

image: mine - in a branch of boots on oxford street

both MAC, with their STYLE WARRIOR range of zebra & leopard lip/gloss/powder cases in summer shades and boots 17 with their faux-fur-packaged mini-gift box have adopted animal prints to jazz up their otherwise not very exciting 'new' promos... anyone fooled? nope, nothing to see here.

COME OUT & PLAY: bergdorf goodman playsuit ad 1953

a couple of months ago i was browsing through ebay using the search 'leopard playsuit' when i scrolled across this vintage ad for bergdorf goodman, the NY department store that i don't think i visited in '07 but wish i could time travel back to just to pick up this nifty little number - versatile!

here's the small print:

1953 news - leopard spots cooly printed on tawny cotton, for the newest, newsiest playsuit of the year. playsuit $20. cover-up black straw-finged cotton skirt $25.

the poster's in a tube on my floor waiting to be framed.

GIRLS ON FILM: PRIMITIVE LONDON (1965)

just out on dvd on the bfi's new flipside imprint, this madcap 60s [s]exploitation documentary is a must for fans of retro kitsch and swinging london (like fabulous noir author cathi unsworth who put me on to IT). first released in 1965, it's the follow-up to LONDON IN THE RAW, documenting the other other side of the first half of that decade by drinking with the kids - rockers, mods and beatniks, going down the front at soho's stripjoints and partying in the suburbs with the key-jangling swingers.

in one scene, the semi-nude leopard lady (in leggings and pasties) from the cover roars into view on stage with her animal-print-clad troupe of stripper-cats - on the prowl before being 'caged' behind bars in a high-camp display of leopard-allure. it's like an x-rated version of CATS THE MUSICAL. miow.
